Hi, I’m Stevie Ruiz
I’m a historian whose work centers the voices often left out of environmental narratives — the workers, migrants, and communities of color whose labor and knowledge built the foundations of modern environmentalism.
Stewards of the Land
In Stewards of the Land, I reassess the environmental movement and reveal that it has always been a multiracial endeavor. The book traces how the racialized labor and environmental knowledge of Asian migrants and Chicana/o communities built the material foundations of modern environmentalism.
My Story
I’m a historian whose work lives where environmental justice, labor, and immigration meet. I study the communities — often invisible in the historical record — whose hands and knowledge shaped the American relationship with land. My writing draws from archives and a deep personal commitment to the stories that haven’t been told.
Upcoming Events
I speak at universities, independent bookstores, public libraries, and community organizations across the country. My talks bring the history in my work to life — connecting past labor struggles to present-day environmental justice.
